Job scam quick guide: it's a scam if...

  • they want you to collect and forward money in any way (a "money mule" job). You'll wind up engaged in money laundering, personally defrauded via expertly forged cheques, money orders, etc, or defrauding someone else who pays for goods that never arrive.
  • they want you to receive packages and reship them somewhere else. The goods will have been obtained fraudulently, and they're just using you to make the shipping address appear local. You will be aiding fraud.
  • they want up-front payment (either to them or someone else) of any sort for anything before you can get the job. This is advance fee fraud: there is no job -- it's just a big con to extract money from you.
  • they want you to buy any kind of "membership" or "kit" in order to start. Forget it -- it's not a real job at all: they're trying to sell you something, and they're probably making a bunch of other false claims about it if they're pitching it as a "job".
  • it's a job offer, and it's spam. There are LOTS of these scams about, as you can see.

Overseas money transfers

This is a bit strange and vague, but any mix of spam and "overseas money transfers" means badness. My guess is that Mr So-Called Sexton is looking for suckers to bank forged cheques/money orders.

Hello,

I currently represent a network of over 24 million users who are
predominantly U.S. based.  Our users have elected to opt-in and remain
on our network in order to use a number of sophisticated, cutting-edge
web-based search tools.  The value of these tools have caused our
network to grow by an average of 200,000 users per month. This network
allows my company to direct those users wherever we wish on the top
sixteen search engines.

While we currently represent over 13,000 companies, ranging from single
owner to Fortune-100 entities, we are currently seeking one preferred
source for overseas money transfer services.

I would like to speak with you about this. Our normal run for an exclusive
slot on our Network runs for six months, however due to the holidays I am
extending this to one year at no additional cost for those who sign up
today or tomorrow.

Please contact me at your earliest convenience. I am in the office daily

I have received a response via email from a Robert Sexton, challenging my assessment above. I'll post the body of his email in a separate comment below.

You seem to be under the impression we are running an employment scam. We aren't. We do search engine placement, and the email you got from us re: 'overseas money transfer' had to do with the fact we sell search terms on the Network on an exclusive basis. Your site was misidentified as a site dealing with that, to be perfectly honest, because of a brain fade by an associate of mine who added your email address to a list of emails he found when looking for companies who do that.

Please remove us from your site as we do not do employment scams, or the Nigerian lottery, or other such utter nonsense. We're a fully BBB-certified company.

Spotter said...

In light of Mr Sexton's response, I am inclined to believe that they are not engaging in any employment scams. On the other hand, I am not going to remove this post, because I think the error to which they have confessed should not simply be removed from the public record. They have been so foolish as to send me an unsolicited commercial email (i.e. spam) based on the impression that I deal in the money transfer business. I don't see how anyone with one eye open and half a functioning brain could reach this conclusion based on actually reading my website, so it's only fair to suppose that they did a search for appropriate terms and harvested a bunch of email addresses which included mine.

Spamming is illegal in many countries, folks, and inconsiderate everywhere. Don't do it.

In short, I stand corrected: Star Position are not employment scammers; they are a Search Engine Optimisation company which, like so many others in that business, use spamming as a tool. For that reason alone, I recommend against using them.

Spotter said...

There's one further thing I'd like to add as a kind of warning. Mr Sexton's email was categorised as "spam" by Gmail. This is a bit surprising, because the email is clearly written to me and me alone in direct response to this blog entry. It's not bulk, and therefore not spam, so why did Gmail classify it otherwise?

I don't have any special inside knowledge about Gmail -- I'm just a Gmail user, not a Google employee -- but I know enough about how email works to formulate some educated guesses. My educated guess in this case is that Gmail is triggering on the presence of the "starposition.com" domain name in the email. Such links are a very good way to detect spam, and Gmail's classification in this case suggests that a lot of emails which include the domain "starposition.com" (or possibly "starposition.co.uk") are spam.

Congratulations, Star Position: you have made yourselves Pariahs.

Yeah, he runs the scam from www.starposition.com. I checked it out. 26 million users? If he had 26 million users of that BS Webmenu toolbar, I'd have heard of it by now. What a joke? I wonder what kind of results his customers actually get?

Anonymous said...

He is just one of many scammers who run a con claiming that by buying keywords, you can get placed at the top of search engines. You can learn lots more about him at:

http://forums.seochat.com/seo-help-general-chat-16/do-you-use-starposition-com-71825.html

Watch how he vanishes when the questions get tough.

This loser SPAMs everyone. Forward his crap to spam@uce.gov (the FTC). If enough people do it, they'll finally investigate his a**

Industrial Hygenist said...

Actually, Sexton is just one of many scam artists who sell keyword registration as part of a big toolbar base. This article says it all:

Keyword Exclusivity

One of the most common scams is an offer to sell people exclusive rights over keywords that are guaranteed to bring in traffic. These people claim that most users search by typing keywords directly in the address bar. They also claim that millions of users have installed a special software on their system. They show you attractive figures that show how many times a keyword is being searched for. While these figures may look impressive they are overly inflated and unrealistic.

When people type in keywords in the address bar the results displayed are those from MSN (if the browser is Internet Explorer and default search engine is MSN). While, at some point, there had been discussions about MSN closing deals with companies to sell "keywords" to them, they have never materialised. The idea, however, has remained and people make a healthy profit from the gullibility of people.

"Without being seen first on the major search engines, your
website can be little more than a glorified business card."

"If your site is seen first on the search engines, chances are
you're the one people will tend to contact. It's that simple."

Discover a better way to be seen on the major search engines.
A way that over 14,000 companies have already discovered.
Their sites are ALWAYS seen at the top of the major search
engines, WITHOUT the exorbitant pay per click charges.

This is the placement we do for Chase Bank with the search
term 'BANKING'

This is the placement we do for Kathryn Bishop, a Realtor
in Los Angeles, with the search term 'LOS ANGELES REAL
ESTATE'

And, lastly, this is the placement we do for Stone Canyon
Mortgage, with the search term 'MORTGAGE'

We can provide you that same placement, exclusively, across
GOOGLE, YAHOO, MSN and thirteen other search engines.

This Network is based on established, proven search toolbar
technology, having been in existence for over five years. This
search toolbar network is at over 26 million, and for 100% of
those who have the search toolbar, you have just seen what
they see on the major search engines!

You, too can have this guaranteed type of exposure. Our normal
run on the Network goes for six months, but for those who
register with us before the end of the week, we will give you the
second six months at no additional cost. We will also include our
Click2Call service, which can put people on the phone to you
directly from a search engine, at no additional cost.

As for the cost, you'll probably spend more for your morning
coffee over the coming year than you would spend for this. We

I've been getting numerous e-mails from the guy, and calling and e-mailing and asking to be taken off his lists did not work. I've started calling people mentioned in his e-mail since they obviously support what he does.

Forward the e-mail with headers to spam@uce.gov to report him. Also, abuse@sbcglobal.net

Funny how he asks to be removed from your site, while it doesn't seem he can be bothered to remove people who request to be taken off his time-theft list.

I have gotten three e-mails from him on one account today -- more on the other. I get them every day.

I hope his mother knows to be ashamed of him.

And if he's a fully BBB-certified company, there's something fully wrong with the BBB.

I get emails from Robert Sexton all the time, through a dozen of my websites. That's how I found this blog post, by Googling his phone number.

Apparently he is unfamiliar with the CAN-SPAM act in this country.

Robert, why don't you just accept the fact that you are a spammer and stop defending yourself as a decent business man. And quit spamming people. If you're such a search engine placement superstar, then why do you have to spam? I do SEO work and all my clients find me ... because that's what search engine placement does.

Not very good at your own trade, evidently.

Unknown said...

You really need to re-read what the Can Spam *is* and what it *is not* before you embarrass yourself.

An Unsolicited business email that contains no deceptive or misleading information is not a crime.

If it were a crime then all the flyers you get in your mailbox would be criminal as well.

Oh and I checked the BBB rating of starposition.com - Still in good order.

*Salute!

Anonymous said...

Oh, and you also forgot to post the CAN-SPAM compliant info they do include in their emails. I got maybe one a week before using their opt out feature and never got one after that. Then again considering I see at least one competitor of his on here bitching, it doesn't surprise me you wouldn't mention it.

I'm not in the search engine business, either, but I did look at the site. Theyre up to 28 million now and seem to be in fine shape with the BBB and they have testimonials who swear by what they do ----- and they give their phone numbers ----- which i rarely see anywhere.

Hate to bust your bubbles but I checked out CAN SPAM and since they follow the law what they do isn't illegal. Slightly annoying to some, yeah, but not illegal. At least they dont do the *pump the chumps* with fake traffic ----- bastards at overture ----- these guys competitors ----- reamed me at 700 a month for SIX MONTHS for their pay per click and I didnt get one damn customer!

whos to say this wouldnt work?

Dunno what to say about y'all who say the opt out didnt work. Worked for me without any problem. Maybe hit -----send----- after remove? :)

Anonymous said...

I want to add this too ----- their site and their toolbar isnt designed to work with the address bar ----- youre thinking realnames and they aint realnames. Theirs works from the search engines. The guy on here who says hes in SEO should know better than to lie and say its address bar based. I've got half a mind to call Star Position and offer my services as a civil litigation attorney to file suit against people like you mister seo professional for libel ----- because youre making a knowingly false statement in a public forum where it could damage them by SAYING its address bar based ----- and thats libel in most states!

People like you give the search engines business a bad name ----- and I thought us lawyers were bad!

I do not believe them and their SCAM. They include not website name, they have no appropriate email address refering to their site and most importantly no physical address. If they are so great at getting my sites to be first with google, yahoo, msn etc., they how come I do searches for SEO or other keywords to "find them" they themselves do not ocme up on the first page. I see it this way, if you want me to pay you scumbags to get me on the first page or search engines, proof is in the pudding and I need to see your company first as a perfect example.

SCUMBAGS to all SEO's companies who can't even get themselves on the first page and trying to sucker others.

My complaint about Sexton to the LA BBB, an organization supported by dues from members, was removed.

Don't bother complaining to the BBB. Complain to the attorney general of your state. In California, where Sexton's company is based, that's Jerry Brown.

Complaints to the California Atty. General must be sent in writing to:

(That's "I" street as in "Eye")

I'm told by their press officer that they are read the same day they arrive.

*****

Sexton has no defense against the truth, which is that he is, at the very least, a notorious spammer, so he tends to try to muddy the waters and acuse those who point out his crimes of being one of his competitors. He actually comes up with the most inventive stuff to go into these counter attacks, for instance saying he knows who is trying to besmirch his wonderful reputation, calling them by an invented name, etc., etc. His favorite tactic is to immediately post a response from a make-believe happy customer, but he also likes to pretend he is one of his competitors who wants to "give the devil his due." It's so obviously bogus, it actually turns out to be rather funny after awhile. He really is no good at sockpuppetry so he really should quit trying to fool people, it's all so transparent.

Hey guys, I just got a similar e-mail from some lady named Liz Monteroso. After searching for her domain & finding it blank, looking up her e-mail address & coming up empty, I decided to look up the telephone number & found this post. I'm a professional musician & they decided to contact me for some reason about comedy DVD's. Here's what I got:

I forwarded the e-mail along with the raw source to the FTC (spam@uce.gov) as per one anonymous posters suggestion, hopefully that will help some. You'd think people could find more constructive things to do with their time eh?

Looks like business is turning ethical (not!) but has changed its name from SPN to SPS Solutions. Same spam scam though. Here's the email I received:

Well, the address for the company is NOT. The Suite # is a mail drop box at a mail box rental place. (That fact answers all questions presented in this chat about this company)

Here is the Google Map of the address. Click on the "Street View" and you will see the Mail Box Center rental business that is fronted as the address for the company. Pan to the right and to the right of "SuperCuts" you will see it - http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=793527021124033071&q=16787+Beach+Blvd,+Huntington+Beach,+Orange,+California+92647&hl=en&cd=18&cad=src:pplink&ei=bKe_S5LvDJbqjQO476GPDA

I find this rather upsetting not humorous. This guys name has also been tied to emails sent to inform you that you are the fortunate person that has received funds from Nigeria that were deemed yours from the controller of funds from some Nigerian Bank and political figures that okayed that email. They even associate themselves with the FBI via the FBI Director himself. Well, mister attorney what about that misrepresentation and false association. Not one person can be adjudicated against on this forum when all of these cases are stated from a position of attempted ripoff of their funds to support these guys bank accounts.
