Job scam quick guide: it's a scam if...

  • they want you to collect and forward money in any way (a "money mule" job). You'll wind up engaged in money laundering, personally defrauded via expertly forged cheques, money orders, etc, or defrauding someone else who pays for goods that never arrive.
  • they want you to receive packages and reship them somewhere else. The goods will have been obtained fraudulently, and they're just using you to make the shipping address appear local. You will be aiding fraud.
  • they want up-front payment (either to them or someone else) of any sort for anything before you can get the job. This is advance fee fraud: there is no job -- it's just a big con to extract money from you.
  • they want you to buy any kind of "membership" or "kit" in order to start. Forget it -- it's not a real job at all: they're trying to sell you something, and they're probably making a bunch of other false claims about it if they're pitching it as a "job".
  • it's a job offer, and it's spam. There are LOTS of these scams about, as you can see.

This job is a reshipping scam. Usually this means that the scammers purchase a whole bunch of stuff on stolen credit cards, have it shipped to the "employee", and have the employee reship it overseas to them. If anyone has been suckered into doing this, please tell us (anonymously) where you were asked to ship it, because it's interesting to know where the crooks are. I'm not sure whether to guess West Africa or the Former Soviet Union in this case, but I'll wager on the latter.

Although I've seen quite a few fake recruitment emails from hotels, this is the first time I've seen them claim to be a Sheraton. Real companies don't use hotmail addresses, but real scammers do. The return-path is SPF verified -- it looks like the mail was sent through a webserver. I note that the reply address given in the mail body is "", and Mount Royal job scams are something I've seen. I strongly suspect that all this hotel job scam spam is the work of one gang.

This clown sent a short spate of messages offering money mule jobs, and his gmail drop-box account has probably been nuked already. The first sample claims to be associated with " ", and that site does look a bit dodgy, but I doubt he's actually related to it, so I won't publish any WHOIS data for it. The second sample is just plain weird: he mentions something called "Stock Trading World", but links to the UK Office of Fair Trading website! Interesting choice!
