Job scam quick guide: it's a scam if...

  • they want you to collect and forward money in any way (a "money mule" job). You'll wind up engaged in money laundering, personally defrauded via expertly forged cheques, money orders, etc, or defrauding someone else who pays for goods that never arrive.
  • they want you to receive packages and reship them somewhere else. The goods will have been obtained fraudulently, and they're just using you to make the shipping address appear local. You will be aiding fraud.
  • they want up-front payment (either to them or someone else) of any sort for anything before you can get the job. This is advance fee fraud: there is no job -- it's just a big con to extract money from you.
  • they want you to buy any kind of "membership" or "kit" in order to start. Forget it -- it's not a real job at all: they're trying to sell you something, and they're probably making a bunch of other false claims about it if they're pitching it as a "job".
  • it's a job offer, and it's spam. There are LOTS of these scams about, as you can see.

Re: Is it Another Hotel job Scam Please find if u can confirm

John,

Yes, at a glance I can see that this is a scam -- specifically advance fee fraud. They're promising a nice well-paid job, but they want fees (a "tourist clearance card" of $300 in this case) paid up front. Anyone who is serious about offering paid work will cover all the necessary expenses themselves; anyone who expects you to pay fees is a scam artist. In this case, there is no job: it's just a big lie they're using to con lots of people into paying the $300 fee.

Other than that, the dead give-aways are the fact that the alleged hotel is using a Yahoo! freemail address (unprofessional in the extreme -- many scammers don't even stoop this low), and the fact that the job was advertised in spam email (although I'm assuming that part, since you've only forwarded their response here). In any case, I see a lot of "Canadian hotel" job offers, and they are all scams. If you want a job in a Canadian hotel, go ask one directly. Don't expect the terms to be as inviting as this sweet lie, though.

Beyond what was already said . . . There is no contact information on the web page given, no phone numbers or e-mail addresses, all the links are for hotels in Europe, the company that manages the site is European, with no offices in North America, and they have no free rooms. Ever. Booked solid for three years.

Hi,
I just landed on your blog because I was tracking down a contest scam (Air Ticket Centre cruise). I want to add to all of your good advice that a quick visual aid in spotting employment scams (or whatever) is check the grammar and spelling. I noticed serious grammatical errors in the letters--particularly in subject-verb agreement, singular, plural, use of capital letters etc. Sheesh, in the first sentence he says "your qualification and experiences." Does that make sense to you? Shouldn't it read, "your qualification and experience (NO PLURAL. The next line has misused commas and agreement: Please,(no COMMA NEEDED HERE) note that,(AGAIN NO COMMA) the job description have (should read HAS) been fully stated" and so on. I am not an English teacher and make occasional grammatical erors myself--but one expects a corporation to be careful. Also, if you simply read these types of emails outloud, you can hear that the writer not only uses poor grammar, but English is his second language, and one that was not formally instructed. The sentence structures are awkward and incorrect and the cadences are clearly not English. A good liguist could ferret out, through the use of language clues found throughout the letter, the writer's first language.
