Job scam quick guide: it's a scam if...

  • they want you to collect and forward money in any way (a "money mule" job). You'll wind up engaged in money laundering, personally defrauded via expertly forged cheques, money orders, etc, or defrauding someone else who pays for goods that never arrive.
  • they want you to receive packages and reship them somewhere else. The goods will have been obtained fraudulently, and they're just using you to make the shipping address appear local. You will be aiding fraud.
  • they want up-front payment (either to them or someone else) of any sort for anything before you can get the job. This is advance fee fraud: there is no job -- it's just a big con to extract money from you.
  • they want you to buy any kind of "membership" or "kit" in order to start. Forget it -- it's not a real job at all: they're trying to sell you something, and they're probably making a bunch of other false claims about it if they're pitching it as a "job".
  • it's a job offer, and it's spam. There are LOTS of these scams about, as you can see.

yup - received one just now so they are active and seem to follow on from a big 'scam' allegedly based in Australia

Anonymous said...

I just received the same email. How anyone could fall for something like this I'm not sure.

Spotter said...

I'd be interested in hearing more details about the "big 'scam' allegedly based in Australia". Is there a verifiable Australian link, or is it just another case where the scammer pretends to be from some random country (while he is actually from, say, Nigeria).

Anonymous said...

Just recieved this email, what a joke.

Anonymous said...

so what's the scam?

Spotter said...

The vast majority of these job scams are "money mule" jobs. They trick you into thinking that you are receiving money (in the form of cheques, money orders, or direct transfers), then ask you to forward it to them (minus your cut) to them via Western Union money transfer. See the "Money Mules: a Quick Guide" links in the left margin for more detail.

Just got one of these, but they have changed their email address. The two email addresses in the email are:
info_euroimperial@yahoo.com
euroimperialllc@yahoo.com

I reported this to our spam filtering company (Sprint). If you have a spam filtering company, then I highly suggest that you report these types of emial so that they will show up on their black list.

Jsut received one of these too - at my job no less. Unfortunately there are people who will respond, and end up paying. Wish there was a way to get rid of these things.

I'm in Toronto, Canada and I just got it too.

I RECEIVED THIS EMAIL TODAY ALSO. THIS IS A BRING IN OUR WOLRD, PEOPLE RIPPING OTHER PEOPLE OF AND NO EVEN THINK ANYTHING ABOUT. WHAT FRAUD IS LURKING OUT THERE.

I just received this. I had that bell go off "too good to be true". So I started checking and found this site.

I thought I could beat any scam along the lines described in the side bar by opening a new bank account just for this purpose... Now I am educated about the "funds to deposit to my account" being bogus too. (And I thought I'd win by using a "new/empty" account...) Just shows the "bad guys" have almost everything figured out in their favor.

Glad that little bell went off. I have been SEARCHING for a real full time job for several years. Out of desperation, I may have started down that path. And I would have thought "nothing could go wrong" with a second account... THANKS for this SITE!

Just had this through. Looks like they are active in UK also with another e-mailaddress.

I live in Montréal and just received the exact same message, with a different e-mail address (euroimperialllc@yahoo.com). As far as I'm concerned there are details that aroused my suspicions. The letter did not look professional at all, it did not have a company’s logo and the fact that it did not mention any job description made me question the company's legality so I researched Euroimperial on Google and landed on this blog. I'm glad to know I am not the only suspicious one and that my instincts are still in top shape.

Thank you blogmaster and keep up the good work.

Kidding. Just got this on my work Email and I work for a company that sells spam filters. The Irony

Anonymous said...

Hi ,I live in Boston and today I just reseived from them the same letter, because it was to good to be true I checked "google" Thank you...

Anonymous said...

is there an actual scam involved, or is it just a way of generating a database. See, one option for dealing with these scammers is to reply with false details. This means that the scammer will have to respond to almost as many replies (which will be mainly false), which will mean that its just not worth his time.

Anonymous said...

Received the same email and similar email address that all of you have mentioned. Look very suspicious if it is a big company and not having company email but from free email account such as yahoo. That really give away and spot on as scam.

This e-mail is traveling arround the world. I got one too in Portugal with a diferente adress: madlen_brown@yahoo.com. Thak you for the warning.

I from Portugal and just got one sent by Euroimperial HR department [gecef@caredental.com]. At the end of the mail they say that the return e-mail adreess should be info_euroimperial@yahoo.com. It’s so easy to earn money that way that this people will keep doing it until they are caught by the authorities. The only problem is that no one knows for sure were they are located, and probably in some Countries isn’t illegal to do this scams, if you are doing it in this Country but affecting only people from other Countries rather than there one. Until we don’t have an agreement with all Countries to have a World Wide Web Legal System equal for all the Countries nothing can be done.

But also nothing can’t be done World Wide in other areas because of some minor differences between Countries like religion, color of skin, etc. What can be done in these cases?
