Job scam quick guide: it's a scam if...

  • they want you to collect and forward money in any way (a "money mule" job). You'll wind up engaged in money laundering, personally defrauded via expertly forged cheques, money orders, etc, or defrauding someone else who pays for goods that never arrive.
  • they want you to receive packages and reship them somewhere else. The goods will have been obtained fraudulently, and they're just using you to make the shipping address appear local. You will be aiding fraud.
  • they want up-front payment (either to them or someone else) of any sort for anything before you can get the job. This is advance fee fraud: there is no job -- it's just a big con to extract money from you.
  • they want you to buy any kind of "membership" or "kit" in order to start. Forget it -- it's not a real job at all: they're trying to sell you something, and they're probably making a bunch of other false claims about it if they're pitching it as a "job".
  • it's a job offer, and it's spam. There are LOTS of these scams about, as you can see.

Ashley Furniture (Impostors)

This scammer is presenting himself as Ashley Furniture, a legitimate US-based company. Don't be fooled: the real company has nothing to do with this scam. The job description makes it clear that this is a money mule scam, and the wording suggests that the mode of fraud is check forgery. Little-known fact: just because a check has "cleared" doesn't mean it won't bounce later.

Yes I received this exact email after answering a job ad on jobsonline.com. I even received a cahiers check of 5500.00 through UPS. I then received a email instructing me to deposit cashiers check into my bank making 550.00 the 10% that was promised. This felt like a scam, and so it is. So there you have it. I'm disabled with a broken spine, and on SSI. If I would have done this it would have messed everything up for me. I have been trying to make a living online by doing surveys, and selling personal things thru Ebay. I know there is no way a person can make money online doing such a little task like just making a deposit, and keeping 10%. I have the email I sent asking if this was illigal. The response was no, it is a way to get around the taxes, and half the email I received from this individual was mis-spelled. Like my spelling when I don't take the time to spell check with very accessable email software. What a joke. If it feels wrong, than it is wrong.

I just got scammed out of 2400 dollars by this one. Postal Money orders cleared, cashed then my bank took the money back from me. I'm flat on my back now, since I cashed them and sent them off to what I thought was a legitimate address. Sir Dickson Cole, you better hope you never run into me my far eastern friend. Heck, he even called me over and over on my cell (Calling from unidentified number of course) while I was in the police station, posting the report on the 11000.00 bogus checks they sent me. [Far eastern, namely Indian, accent by the way]

The jokes on you idiots, the cops have a lot of new information on you, Walmart in Alabama who I called to verify your address as well as the series of phone numbers on your UPS package, tracking information, your pickup spot and person and oh so much more.

I received the same e-mail and a check sent to me for $4,500 in my name by UPS. Well I was stupid and thought this was a real (job) but it isn't. I deposited the check and waited for it to clear, but luckily the check didn't clear and I did not touch the money so I didn't lose no money and the scammer didn't gain anything. He went under the name as "Ashley Cungs" and even called my cell phone. So I hope he gets caught who ever this mystery person is!

Ashamed to admit being another sucker. Fortunately, I told a friend about it (after depositing money orders), and she promptly informed me of the scam. I alerted my bank, sent a fraud report to the real Ashley Furniture (a link found in another article about this scam), and now posting here. Next I will file a police report and send e-mails to the local media. I will ignore future e-mails from Paul Kane at www.ashleyfurniture.usa@gmail.com.

John Patridge is who this guy is going by now. Same thing happened to me. I was apply to jobs and I got this e-mail fromAshley Furniture. He sends one from him and then one from Ashley Furniture. The e-mail he sends from is susmarketing@aol.com. I'm not surewhat the Ashley Furniture one was I deleted it. I got the package in the mail but didn't feel comfortable about it, so I sent thisguy an e-mail back and told him that my bank would not cash it and I needed an address to mail this to and he just stopped e-mailing me back.

I recieved this same email. And not knowing any better at the time I replied to email and a $4,000 check was sent to my home with a diffrent company name on it..I believe the name was Elite Golf so thats when I started to wonder. So I went to my bank and opened a NEW acct for the check to be deposited and asked my bank to put a 25 day hold on the check to make sure it clears. That way I have nothing to lose. I emailed "ashley furniture" to let them know about the 25 hold period and they had a fit!! They called my home at 4am to ask why and I had to hang up and they kept calling back...a few days later I recieved a call from my bank saying that the check bounced ( as fraud) thank goodness i didnt give them any personal info other than name and address. PLEASE DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM LIKE I DID!!

We recived these EXACT emails. We also believe that this scammer will pre screen people to scam. We had a motorcycle for sale on craigs list. A person contacted us about the bike and wanted to buy it in full. Asked for our name address & phone number as to contact us, and mail check, ect... When we hadnt heard back from the "buyer" I tried to contact him by email (the only contact info i had). The email account was no longer vaild. That same day we recived The emails about this "job position". After going back and reviewing the emails, we noticed grammer, sentence structure, verbage. Was identical to the person wanting to buy my motorcycle.
Yes, unfortunatly we fell for the scam. During the process I also spoke to the man over the phone. He had an accent and was in a hurry to make sure the funds were transfered. We were scammed out of $12,000.00, of which we will have to take out a loan to pay the bank back. Please for those of you who have been scammed try and think back or view your email accounts and see if there is in anyway you were pre screened for this scam. If you were then we will be able to know if it is the same person scamming people.
I am still in contact with him, I havent let him know that I've been scammed. I hope to try and get some sort of info from him that could help the athuorities catch him. When they catch that sucker only the death penalty would be appropriate!

Almost got me...
I cashed the check, but I can't believe it didn't strike me as odd until after I did. Luckily I hadn't sent the payment out yet.
I undid the transaction and got the check back. Went and gave the check to the local authorities.
This one was listed in SAC craigslist with the email of rb.inc.international@gmail.com and the name Raymond Brooks.
At least I did get one thing out of it though; A very valuable lesson. lol
And it's thanks to this site that that's all I got. =)

Victim A is scammed into sending check, which is received by Victim B. Victim B sends proceeds to scammer, and check subsequently bounces. All Victim B knows is check came from Victim A and contacts him. All Victim A knows is an untraceable email and untraceable phone. The victim who posted on 14 December 2007 is an example. He thinks Victim A is the scammer. The Ashley scam is more than a year old.

I got pretty much the same email from Brad Lilian. And I received the check yesterday through UPS. I actually read the e-mail he sent me before I saw the check (someone else was home to sign for it) and in his email this dumb ass told me that the customer forgot to sign the check. But it was ok for me to sign it because they had already cleared it with the bank.

How stupid do they think people are? It's one thing to think everything is legit if all the T's are crossed and I's dotted...but it's another when they dumb ass doesn't even sign the check! So of course I had to google this person now...

I've been scammed by things like this before, and like many of you I was responding to a job posting. And you know it's crap like this and the other At Home scamming bs that just pisses me off. It makes it so much harder to actually find a job. These people need to get a legit life and stop praying on the vonerable(I know it's spelt wrong leave me alone).

Anyway, I'll be passing the info on that I have as well. I hope they get this stupid person (or people) behind this...But it's not going to stop the next jerk from doing it.

I was stupid (I admit - more through desperation for a job than actual studity I fear) and gave my details. I dont want this "job" though, any advice on what to do now? It is safe to ignore or destroy any checks which are sent to you. It's safe to ignore the scammers -- they generally operate from a great distance for their own safety.

I received and replied to this same type of email from Sir Richard Cole and I feel so foolish. After I submitted my information, I received three money orders in the mail and was asked to cash them. I didn't cash them because it didn't feel right. My daughter came along and cashed the money orders. She is in so much trouble. We just left court today and the judge wants to give her six months in jail, two years probation, clean-up at the land-fill two days a month, $1000 fee, court cost, and a monthly fee for supervision. We have to go back to court on on Monday and I really don't know what her outcome will be. Her attorney said, she should prepare herself to go to jail. Please, please, please, beware! Do not allow this person to take advantage of you. It will destroy your family. It must be some way to stop this guy.

These people are real a@# h%*#s. I have just been laid off and for the first time in my adult life don't have a job. With two little girls at home not in school yet I have been trying to sell things on E Bay to make extra money. Have my resume on monster doing everything I can to get by. It is not rocket science! Have a look at any legitimate worthwhile corporate out there. They all have a proper e mail address or contact address. . com - .co .uk and soforth. Anything from Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, or any other free mail service cannot be from a legitimate source. Wake UP!
