Job scam quick guide: it's a scam if...

  • they want you to collect and forward money in any way (a "money mule" job). You'll wind up engaged in money laundering, personally defrauded via expertly forged cheques, money orders, etc, or defrauding someone else who pays for goods that never arrive.
  • they want you to receive packages and reship them somewhere else. The goods will have been obtained fraudulently, and they're just using you to make the shipping address appear local. You will be aiding fraud.
  • they want up-front payment (either to them or someone else) of any sort for anything before you can get the job. This is advance fee fraud: there is no job -- it's just a big con to extract money from you.
  • they want you to buy any kind of "membership" or "kit" in order to start. Forget it -- it's not a real job at all: they're trying to sell you something, and they're probably making a bunch of other false claims about it if they're pitching it as a "job".
  • it's a job offer, and it's spam. There are LOTS of these scams about, as you can see.

I just received the same email from VSM Group. Glad I looked it up prior to responding!

VMS Scam alive and well as craigslist.com posting for "Document Control - Bookkeeper Assistant position". 7/3/2009

Christy Laster said...

wow. i received their email this morning and as my husband and i were researching it, he found your site. THANKS so much!! :)

Was on Craigslist: Receptionist job, $1800 for 3 hrs per day. There was an extreme amount of information about how the employee will be hired on a trial basis with training....blah, blah. The in the duties seemed to reflect making a lot of Monetary arrangements for "the client" taking first your 3% commission and send the rest on to "the client". RED FLAGS are up! ---- warning Will Robinson Warning!

Anonymous said...

I received the same email from VSM Group headquartered in Geneva in response to ad on craigslist. The position I applied for Bookkeeper/Admin Assist. was filled but I qualified for data entry. $1800/mo....Email came from steven.orologas718@gmail.com

Anonymous said...

This is crazy! I received the email from a Eric Moore (ericsoninc@gmail.com) but unlike you guys, I did my research kind of late. So the next thing you know he emails me to tell me that he sent a $1850.00 check out to me via UPS and I need to put it in MY account, take 5% than Western Union the rest (minus the Western Union fee)to someone else. I'm glad I looked this up but once he said I need to put the check into my account, I knew it was a scam. VSM, needs to be punished... Why isn't anyone doing anything about this?

D Geek at Work said...

Actually if they do send you the check you can take it to your post office and file a claim against them.
Then you would have something to prove fraudulent action. Otherwise if you saw their ad on Craigslist or somewhere else you can report it with that place. How this helps.

Anonymous said...

I received an email too from a Steve Orologas wanting me to work from home. I felt uneasy about the way they responded and that their headquarters is in Geneva. The ad I applied for was an bookkeeping assistant.

I simply replied saying that I was uninterested and unprepared to work from home. Period.

Eyes open is the most important thing. If something feels weird, than it probably isn't a good thing.

Hopeful (Potential-Teacher) Person said...

From Wutang Smith my arse. Thanks for putting this up here.

What I got was....

VSM Group a "watch company"

The real VSM Group (helps to develop sewing machines) should sue them or pursue some kind of action to shut them down.

I love these websites! I've been "offered" jobs like these for the past months... but thanks to websites like this one, I just ignore the offer. I too received an email for Admin/Office Manager... BULL S****!!! What a waste of time!

Anonymous said...

I received this email too!

Mine was from Brandon Sanders (braysanders@gmail.com) at VSM Group.

Sounded too good to be true, glad I checked around first!

I knew something was fishy when the ad said $17.50/hr but then they said $1800/mo for 3 hours per day mon-fri...

plus, you know, when money changes hands that many times, you know something is wrong...

Anonymous said...

Just recieved this email this morning (9/12/2009). Still goes by "VSM Group". Bunch of pricks.

email came from robert.moore1002@gmail.com. Craigslist listing for "Administrative Assistant-18.50 per hr"

It makes me so mad that I wasted my time writing a tailored coverletter for these thieves. >:(

Unknown said...

I also applied for a position on craigslist - PostingID: 1396410087 - Administrative Assistant. Sent to destinedgroup@gmail.com - reply came from Mary Wayne today (Sept. 29th) stating VSM Group, with its headquarters in Geneva, is the Swiss watch industry’s
active trade association. Typing errors or garbled text raises red flag!!!

Same reporting details:
Date: August 8, '06
Buyer: Laura N. Smith
Item: Movado Watch
Price: $ 1,921.27
Commission 5%: $ 96
Fees: $ 75
Total Forwarded: $1750.27
Forwarded to: Elisa Narenzo, Copenhagen, Denmark
Reference Numbers: 23497839

After I'd applied I went back to craigslist to print out the job ad again, but the posting had disappeared. Maybe craigslist has got wise to this one!

Anonymous said...

I received the same email from VSM Group at 3pm today. I'm glad I found this site. It just seemed too good to be true. I also wasted my time looking for the ad on craigslist. It was no where to be found. This whole scam caused me at lost of my time, but I'm glad I didnt buy into it.

Hey!!
This add is on Craigslist
"Bookkeeper Needed ASAP! $14.50 - $17.00 /Hour"

I just received an email like this from VSM Group and it looks real because its even posted on Monster.com. Glad I found this website because I am kinda suspicious the company did not even provide any other information about the company and even contact numbers or address.

Just received the same also from Monster as VSM Group..so glad I looked it up. As the old saying goes..if it sound to good to be true....

Jayel said...

They also go by "XSM Group". I sent my resume to an ad on Craigslist seeking an Office Assistant and received a response identical to the ones above.

Here are good people trying to find honest work, for honest pay. Why aren't the job search engines (i.e. - Monster, Careerbuilder & Craigslist) doing more to verify these are legitimate companies posting these positions? It makes them less credible for applicants to use and is in the long run, harming their reputation.

Thanks for your post! I got the same email from XSM Group. It sounded a little fishy and the pay (and paying my taxes!!!) sounded a little to good to be true. So I did a little research. I am glad that you posted this and other people have written their comments. It is disheartening to find out that what sounded like a decent Receptionist job on Craigslist was a scam.

AshleeO. said...

Same here- I saw the ad on Craigslist, but this time there was no company name, so I emailed the poster and asked for more information. The email they sent me had the XSM Group title and a lot of info about the job, but nothing was stated specifically about what "XSM" was, although I had asked- no website, nothing. If you are applying for a job and the company won't tell you anything about itself- and especially if the job sounds too good to be true-chances are, it is. Thanks for posting this guys. It was the only thing I could actually track down on the internet about "XSM" and it saved me a lot of trouble dealing with these people.

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately, I got the same "XSM" scam e-mail and I sent a responding e-mail providing what they asked for which included my name, address, phone number, and e-mail address; do I need to contact the police to protect myself from fraud?

Unknown said...

Got the same email from Eric Moore (newmoorr@gmail.com) from "VSM Group" after applying for an Administrative Assistant position on craigslist... The email seemed VERY fishy so I did a search and it turned up this blog. BEWARE!

Just got this same XSM scam email (and too many others like it recently). I'm an avid flagger on cragislist. Here I go again!

Unknown said...

what happens if you go along with it? like mail the check...or cash it?

Spotter said...

Here's how it works.

1. You receive the check and bank or cash it.
2. You send 95% of the money so received to the scammer via Western Union.
3. The check bounces. If you banked it, your account is probably now overdrawn. If you cashed it, the agency that gave you the cash probably sends debt collectors after you.

Basically, the scammer gets away scot free, and you end up in a world of hurt.
