I'm posting this one only because it got past the Gmail spam filter. The sender used a WiMax Internet connection in Pakistan (if the WHOIS record for 110.37.31.115 is to be believed). The job description is really vague, but it's probably cheque fraud or a reshipper scam. It's definitely a scam, though: they're spamming it out and saying "I just found your email". No they didn't: they're looking for victims.

A correspondent reports the unhappy news that he has lost money to these scammers. This fake job offer is actually an advance fee fraud scam: they express an interest in hiring you, but require that you pay airfares and other fees. There is no job: it's just a con. If someone wants to hire you for anything, require them to cover any and all associated costs, and assume it's a scam if they won't.

Scammers change the names associated with their scams quite regularly, so if you see something that looks similar to this, but with different names, the chances are that it's exactly the same scam.

I get the impression that there is a scammer out there (this one) who does nothing but impersonate various Chinese textile companies -- or just make up names of Chinese textile companies -- I'm not sure which. Anyhow, this one is targeting folks from New Zealand, which is something I don't see much.

The scam is a money mule scam: the scammer wants to send you fraudulent money orders or something like that, and have you send back cash via Western Union.

If you've arrived here wondering if this is a scam, then YES IT IS. It's a big league theft, fraud, and money laundering scam. They need suckers to act as "money mules" -- people who unwittingly launder money on behalf of these crooks. For much more extensive coverage of this scam than I can offer, see bobbear's coverage of the scam.

These folks have been hitting the spam folder A LOT in the past week or three. I've counted somewhere on the order of seventy spams, and they may not be finished yet. The folks behind this spam are obviously the more serious criminal types, since they're doing a fair bit to muddy the waters: they use multiple domain names for their website, and they never use the same name (in the "my name is" phrase) twice.

Note that syfer.com is a real company -- these scammers do not have anything to do with it, however. They are just using Syfer's name as a cover story. The WHOIS data for Syfer.com lists their address as Old Stoke Road, Arminghall, Norwich, UK -- not the address listed in this spam. In any case, the scam is probably cheque fraud (receive and cash fraudulent cheques, forward the money, then lose out when the cheque bounces).

A search shows that this particular scam has been circulating since at least 2008, but I can't see it in my own archives anywhere, and it's still active, so here 'tis. This job has been widely advertised on lots of employment ad websites. Watch out, folks: those employment ad websites rarely (if ever) verify that the advertisers are legitimate!

Although the job description is short on details, it clearly involves receiving and forwarding money, making it one of the usual variations on fraud of that sort. If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that this one is a money mule scam, where the "employee" is asked to forward stolen money. Money comes in by direct bank transfer (fraudulent), and goes out via Western Union. It could be cheque fraud, though.

I received two copies of this spam, each with different (but similarly constructed) Gmail contact addresses.

This looks like an attempt to recruit unwitting volunteers into organised credit card fraud. One technique for turning stolen credit cards into hard cash is to set up a fake online shop, then conduct a large number of small fraudulent purchases on that shop with stolen credit card data. As is usually the case, the organisers behind this kind of crime prefer to hire some ignorant middle-man to handle most of the high-profile activity by which one might be traced. The middle-man has the task of forwarding on the ill-gotten gains in a less easily traced manner -- and liaising with the police when the fraud is eventually uncovered. In this case, there may be a direct tie-in with other "internet currency" services, but it's hard to be sure.

It's also possible that the entire point of this scam is the "test transactions" in the "training period". These could be used to directly defraud the "employee". Again, it's hard to be sure in advance. The modus operandi of the spammers suggests more sophistication than simple hit-and-run fraud, but it's a distinct possibility.

Multiple instances of this spam were received, all to fairly old email addresses which have long since been retired into service as spamtraps. In all cases, the "from" address was the same as the "to" address, and actual contact was requested through a Gmail account having a user name of ten or eleven random letters. The number of such random accounts appears to be quite large. The spams originated in South America: some from Brasil, some from Colombia.

I don't have a lot to say about this one -- it looks like cheque fraud. A Google search indicates that "Velso Estate Solutions" had a couple of Craigslist ads, which were subsequently removed. I can see no evidence that a company of that name actually exists anywhere, although it might. Whatever the case, this particular offer is the work of a scammer.

This is a curious one. It's very clearly a well organised fraud, but I'm not sure how it works. The scammers want the victim to have a credit card (to receive funds from the company to purchase items), but it's not clear exactly how one is going to receive funds that way. I doubt that they're simply fishing for credit card numbers, although that's a possibility. If anyone has become involved in this scam, (a) get out of it -- quickly, and (b) tell us what happened.

This spam was sent to multiple spamtrap addresses under my control (either directly or indirectly). Each came "from" a random address with reply-to set to the same address. The originating IP addresses varied widely, suggesting that it was sent using a botnet. Several different email addresses were used (in the body of the message) as reply addresses, and they were all improperly encoded as HTTP links instead of email addresses.

This spam originated at IP address 196.3.182.250, belonging to CTAccess, a broadband provider in Abuja, Nigeria. Need I say more? It's a scam -- probably cheque fraud. So far as I can tell, "Metals UK" is a real company (he provides a link to their website, and lists their address), and this Nigerian is an impostor pretending to represent them. Note that he uses a UK +4470 telephone number, which can be forwarded to any other phone number in the world.

There are lots of "Ken Allens" in this world -- this one is a fake. The "from" address in the email used the domain name kenallen.co.uk, which evidently belongs to "Ken Allen's Compton Buildings Limited", and has absolutely nothing to do with this scam. The scammer doesn't want you to reply to that address -- he wouldn't receive the mail. Instead, replies are to go to a live.co.uk anonymous free webmail account.

The scam itself appears to be cheque fraud: the scammer wants you to receive and bank fraudulent cheques, then forward money via Western Union.

Note the curious similarity between this scam and the Jason Wang Co. spam, recently received. Can you spot it? It's fairly obvious. Can you explain this similarity?

This is a reshipper scam. These scammers purchase goods on stolen credit cards, but operate out of a country with a bad reputation for such fraud, so that merchants will not deal with them. Instead, they use the identity and shipping address of the "employee", so that the fraud is not detected until after the goods have left the country. This is organised crime, and the "employee" can expect a visit from the police sooner or later, with all the awkwardness that implies.

The domain name "unitedsco.net" seems to have been registered specifically for this scam.

This is a reshipper scam. Credit card fraudsters want to purchase goods from merchants in your country using stolen credit card data, but they need the transaction to look less suspicious. They operate out of countries which are so well-known for credit card fraud that most merchants won't even deal with them, so they need reshippers to accept the goods locally and forward them overseas to avoid suspicion. The reshipper eventually gets a visit from the police because of all the fraud associated with that shipping address.

A Google search for "BottonGost" revealed an independent report of this scam, plus a curiously large number of links which have all gone 404 (page not available). The scammers are requesting replies to an email address in the "bottongost.cn" domain, which appears to have been registered for the purposes of this scam.

This is a check fraud scam. The "employer" sends you forged checks which are of sufficiently high quality that the fraud won't be detected until after the check clears. The fraud usually goes like this: they have a wonderful live-in job for you at a luxurious hotel, but you need to pay some kind of working visa fee. There is no job, and the scammer pockets the fee.

HeidelbergCement is a real enough company, as a quick web search will readily verify. That makes this scam fairly effective, because most people will search for the company name, and they'll get LOTS of hits -- but most of the ones which warn about this particular scam will be well down the list. This job offer is NOT from HeidelbergCement: it's just an impostor scammer using their identity as his cover story.

Note that the job requirements include "processing payments". The vast majority of all job scams are of this type. There are various ways in which scammers can either defraud you directly or use you to launder stolen money using this cover story. The job description doesn't make clear which particular method this scammer will use.

I've received eight of these spams to various accounts on two separate occasions (about a week apart). The sample shown here is from the latter occasion. I have not seen this scam reported widely: Fraud Watchers has the only known report at this time.

This appears to be a reshipper scam. When international credit card fraudsters purchase something on a stolen card, they generally want the card owner and delivery address to be in the same country as the merchant, so the merchant doesn't get too suspicious. To this end, they hire reshippers to forward the fraudulently obtained goods out of the country. This is, of course, blatantly illegal.

The name "EVS Logistics Company" is just a cover story. These scammers do not represent any company, and any company name they use is just a smoke screen to make the job offer sound legitimate.

This offer pretends to be from careerbuilder, and some of the associated text is boilerplate used by the Gallup Organisation in their job ads. The scam itself appears to be a reshipper scam: fraudsters who purchase items using stolen credit cards need local people to receive the goods so that the merchants don't get too suspicious. Of course, when the fraud is discovered, the reshipper comes under sudden intense scrutiny from law enforcement, which can be rather unpleasant.

This scam has not been widely reported: a relevant search only finds one independent report. I'm not sure whether this means that it hasn't been widely circulated, or whether these scammers are VERY good at staying below the radar of most scam reporters.

A correspondent forwarded me this scam, which is still fairly fresh (the domain name was registered early this month). It's just another payment processing scam, probably involving fraudulent cheques. The story goes like this: "employee" is asked to receive cheques, bank them, and forward a percentage of the proceeds via Western Union. Employee receives cheque, deposits it, withdraws cash, forwards it, and then the cheque bounces because it is a forgery. The "employee" has lost whatever money he forwarded via Western Union. It's also possible that this is a money mule scam in which the payments are made by direct transfer -- stolen out of someone's account by compromising their Internet banking. The "job description" doesn't give enough detail to be sure. You can be quite sure that it's a nasty scam, though, one way or the other.

I have received a couple of notices in the last few days about a scam operating under the name of Sydney Oil LLC. This is a check/money order fraud scam targeting victims in North America: the scammers send forged checks/money orders to their victim employees, and the employees are asked to send back cash via Western Union. When the fraudulent nature of the checks/money orders is discovered, the bank or other institution which cashed them will take its money back, leaving the victim out of pocket as the victim of fraud.

The scammers do not represent any company: the name "Sydney Oil" is just one of many random names that these scammers have used over time. At the time of writing, the domain name "sydneyoil.com" is hosted by Google Apps. It has been registered for a surprisingly long time, although still less than one year. It's possible that these scammers plan their future scam names well in advance to make them look less suspicious.

STEP 1 - Track and Receive Customer Payments

After orders are sealed on our end, payments will be sent out to you via Courier service. Mostly FedEx or UPS. Tracking numbers to these payments will be emailed to you.

Kindly visit the site www.ups.com or www.fedex.com input the tracking issued to you and you will be able to see the status of the package in transit to you.

This is so you are aware of the delivery time and you make yourself or someone available to
receive the payments from the courier service.

STEP 2 - Deposit or Cash Payments

once payments are in your possession kindly go to your bank and have the payments (MONEY ORDERS) deposited for 24hrs . If you can get cash immediately better, then proceed with step 3.

(Kindly have in mind that the sooner you complete a transaction, the sooner another payment is sent to you. You will not receive another transaction until a pending transaction is completed.)

Time is of essence, so I suggest all transactions are completed within a space of 48hrs.

STEP 3 - Deduct Percentage Salary

kindly deduct 8% from the cash at hand.

The efficiency and Speed you use in handling your fir st transaction will go a long way in determining the size of the next amount you will receive, this way you hold your promotion to handling larger payments in your own hands.

STEP 4 - Send Companies Balance

An email will be sent to you detailing appointed delegates to receive the companies balance. Kindly locate
a western union agent office close to you and have the monies sent to the delegates from there.

Once payments are sent off, kindly email the sending details back to me which will include the following;

MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number)
Test Question and Answer
Total Amount sent.

Be careful to avoid typographical errors when sending payment details from Western Union and emailing
details back to me.

NOTE: Western Union Charges are to be deducted from the company's remaining balance and not from your percentage pay.

To find Western Union Agent location please dial 1-800-325-6000 and follow the voice prompts.

STEP 5 - Log Book

Once you have completed all four steps above, go to your Log Book and enter the following;

Work-at-home Spam

In recent hours I've started to receive a flood of spam relating to work-at-home opportunities. The sender is attempting to use deceptive techniques to avoid spam filters -- quite unsuccessfully from the perspective of my gmail account. The information provided in the spams is very thin, but it seems probable that this is a subscription scam: the spammer is selling a (dodgy) product, not offering jobs, and given how deceptive his marketing is, you'd be an idiot to trust him with your credit card details in my opinion. I give this guy a big two thumbs down, and suggest that you avoid him like the plague.

Here are some samples of the spam in question. Note that they are all obviously from the same sender, but do not use consistent names or email addresses. Such evasiveness is never a good sign.

Jobs of the sort described here do exist, but they are very rare, and not offered as "work at home" positions to random people on the Internet. This is a scam where the scammer wants to send you stolen money or forged cheques, and have you send back cash via Western Union or similar on the pretext that you are evaluating their service. This is no different to the usual money mule scam where the pretext is that you are processing customer payments.

With all scams you need to look past the cover story and think about what actually happens, otherwise you might not recognise this as a money mule scam, just because the cover story has changed.

A fair bit of effort has been put into the website, but they are evidently keeping the same website layout as they churn through different names. For example, Bobbear recently reported a nearly identical scam operating under the name "Kraemer Logistics".

The reshipper scam means that the "employee" will be required to receive goods which have been purchased using stolen credit cards (or similar) and re-ship the goods overseas to the fraudsters.

There has been a massive torrent of this particular spam in the last half a day -- instances of this one spam accounted for more than half the spam I received (to this particular address) in that period. Subject lines vary significantly, but the body text remains pretty static. The use of multiple Gmail accounts and the "our surveys show" text strongly suggest that this scammer was also responsible for the "global auto agency" scam early this year.

The kind of scam involved here is a basic money mule scam: they want you to receive stolen money through direct bank transfers, then launder it via Western Union. Gmail contact addresses seen in association with this scam so far are as follows.

A correspondent sent me an inquiry about a job offer received on Craigslist: someone claiming to represent "Fabricom Oil and Gas Ltd" is currently only too happy to employ people as an Administrative Assistant/Accounts Receivable Clerk. This job is also known as "money mule", or more precisely "sucker who will be asked to cash forged checks or money orders and then abandoned as soon as they are caught". In other words, these people are looking for victims, not employees. A quick search shows evidence that there is a real Fabricom Oil and Gas, but they have nothing to do with this scam. As a general rule, all job offers which involve handling money for overseas entities are scams. Those looking for a job on Craigslist should be particularly aware of this, but it holds for those looking for jobs on dedicated employment websites and also in newspapers!

This is a cheque/money order forgery scam disguised as a Mystery Shopper offer. The source of the email appears to be 212.100.69.11, which is currently registered to a network service provider in Lagos, Nigeria (big surprise). The website mentioned in this spam is not actually related to the scam -- it's just part of the scammer's cover story. What's really going on here is that the scammer wants to send you forged cheques or money orders and have you cash them at some facility and wire back the bulk of the money via Western Union or similar, all under the pretext that you're trying out the associated services, and are going to write a report on it. The truth of the matter is that he just needs willing suckers to take the legal risks associated with cashing forged cheques and money orders.

Steer clear of this Nigerian scammer crap, and rest assured that ANY "mystery shopper" offer you receive by email is just another cover story for a scam.

"Olpio Solutions" appears to be a completely made-up name, with no hits in Google at the time of composing this report. Based on information from their website, it's clear that this is a cheque ("check" in the USA) fraud scam: they send you forged cheques, and want you to cash them and wire back the cash. Cheques can bounce after you draw on them in most cases, so you'll wind up personally out of pocket quite a large amount for your efforts.

JOB SUMMARY

Finance and Operations Department manages the administrative side of our business on day-to-day basis. As a Transactions Analyst, you will be in charge receiving funds into a bank account you create and processing them to our international account. In this role, you will have actual business responsibility from day one, with your duties ranging from receiving incoming funds alerts from your supervisor and confirming the transfers arriving into your account, to initiating transfers into our managed client accounts in Russia and confirming the settlement.
