Job scam quick guide: it's a scam if...

  • they want you to collect and forward money in any way (a "money mule" job). You'll wind up engaged in money laundering, personally defrauded via expertly forged cheques, money orders, etc, or defrauding someone else who pays for goods that never arrive.
  • they want you to receive packages and reship them somewhere else. The goods will have been obtained fraudulently, and they're just using you to make the shipping address appear local. You will be aiding fraud.
  • they want up-front payment (either to them or someone else) of any sort for anything before you can get the job. This is advance fee fraud: there is no job -- it's just a big con to extract money from you.
  • they want you to buy any kind of "membership" or "kit" in order to start. Forget it -- it's not a real job at all: they're trying to sell you something, and they're probably making a bunch of other false claims about it if they're pitching it as a "job".
  • it's a job offer, and it's spam. There are LOTS of these scams about, as you can see.

NameNameXX@gmail

A while back I reported a job scam spammer using the name "Colin Scowcroft" who always used contact addresses of the form " FirstnameSurnameLetterLetter@gmail.com". This same pattern of Gmail addresses has re-emerged in a new run of spam which doesn't provide any consistent contact name, or any kind of company name at all. The text associated with the spam also contains a goodly degree of randomisation, choosing between roughly equivalent phrases, and a wide variety of subject lines. Also, the current batch have some irrelevant text about nanotechnology or microchip design at the head and tail of the message. Some examples follow -- sorry for the repetition, but it gives you an idea as to how they are randomising the text.

If anyone has communicated with this particular spam-gang, please let me know. I'd be intrigued to see what they send you if you communicate with them. As it stands, I'm not 100% sure what kind of scam they're running -- the job offer itself tells us almost nothing -- but anyone who spams like this is looking for victims, not employees.

This one came straight from Nigeria -- literally (IP address 41.219.241.119). "Sinopec Co., Ltd." is just some random company that the scammer has decided to impersonate. There is probably a real company by that name, and they'll probably be ticked off when they hear about this scam -- a money mule scam. Because it's from Nigeria and targets the USA, the expected pattern is check forgery: scammer sends fake check to unwitting sap, unwitting sap banks it, draws out 90% of the value, then sends that money via Western Union back to the scammer. Check later bounces, leaving the unwitting sap severely out of pocket.

This one is clearly a reshipper scam. Your employers make online purchases with stolen credit card details, and have the goods shipped to you. You are then required to reship the goods overseas to them -- and deal with the police when they trace all the fraudulent purchases to your address.

I don't think of these as "too good to be true": I think of them as "enticing bait on a vicious hook".

Yes, at a glance I can see that this is a scam -- specifically advance fee fraud. They're promising a nice well-paid job, but they want fees (a "tourist clearance card" of $300 in this case) paid up front. Anyone who is serious about offering paid work will cover all the necessary expenses themselves; anyone who expects you to pay fees is a scam artist. In this case, there is no job: it's just a big lie they're using to con lots of people into paying the $300 fee.

Other than that, the dead give-aways are the fact that the alleged hotel is using a Yahoo! freemail address (unprofessional in the extreme -- many scammers don't even stoop this low), and the fact that the job was advertised in spam email (although I'm assuming that part, since you've only forwarded their response here). In any case, I see a lot of "Canadian hotel" job offers, and they are all scams. If you want a job in a Canadian hotel, go ask one directly. Don't expect the terms to be as inviting as this sweet lie, though.
