Job scam quick guide: it's a scam if...

  • they want you to collect and forward money in any way (a "money mule" job). You'll wind up engaged in money laundering, personally defrauded via expertly forged cheques, money orders, etc, or defrauding someone else who pays for goods that never arrive.
  • they want you to receive packages and reship them somewhere else. The goods will have been obtained fraudulently, and they're just using you to make the shipping address appear local. You will be aiding fraud.
  • they want up-front payment (either to them or someone else) of any sort for anything before you can get the job. This is advance fee fraud: there is no job -- it's just a big con to extract money from you.
  • they want you to buy any kind of "membership" or "kit" in order to start. Forget it -- it's not a real job at all: they're trying to sell you something, and they're probably making a bunch of other false claims about it if they're pitching it as a "job".
  • it's a job offer, and it's spam. There are LOTS of these scams about, as you can see.

I have to admit that I'm a bit baffled by this job ad. It seems to have arrived in my inbox due to my scam-bait resume on careerbuilder.com, but it's not the usual no-qualifications-required job scam. Could it be that these people are primarily seeking to obtain email addresses of targeted individuals for spamming purposes, or is it just another money mule scam?

The email address, "job@seepost.net" is the only data point in this spam I really believe. The reply-to address may be for real, since it would be unusual for a spammer to bother with a false reply-to address. The reference to "CyberCoders Sales & Marketing Specialists" is almost certainly smokescreen: I don't believe the senders are at all related to CyberCoders (an organisation with which I am not familiar).

If anyone has actually corresponded with these spammers, please let us know what they say.

The testimonial in this spam claims that the person in question has been working for "Luxury Travel Shop" for two years. This is rather unlikely, given that the domain name was only registered last month. Although it doesn't give any detail as to the kind of work involved, I confidently predict that it involves receiving money in one form, and forwarding it (minus a cut) via Western Union. This is what we call a money mule job, and the people behind them are crooks.

This money mule scam was extremely sparse on details, so I requested further information. Turns out he's another one of these money mule scammers (of the check and money order forging variety) who likes to impersonate textile companies of the form "X&Y International" (for various values of X and Y). There seems to be an awful lot of them.

PyramidexTrust

This is the LT Gold Finance money mule scam under a new name. I received quite a few copies of this spam, and note that they are using at least four different domain names for their fake company at this time. Rather than post WHOIS data for all of them, I'll summarise here. All were created on 04-apr-2007 and registered through OnlineNIC. All use NS1.SERVERSD.BIZ and NS2.SERVERSD.BIZ as name servers. Known domain names are as follows.

Presumably there is a real company by this name: the scammer uses their address as the "from" address, but wants replies sent to a Yahoo! account. That's because the "from" address is a lie. No details are given, but it's a safe bet to assume it's a money mule job.

Aegis Capital Group (impostors)

Summary

Money mule scam, following the pattern of the Lux Capital and Radius Investments scams. See links in the sidebar for more information about money mule scams, but the short story is that your "employers" transfer money from compromised bank accounts to yours, then get you to forward the money to them via Western Union. This is illegal, of course, which is why they lie about it. If you've been caught by this scam, stop sending any money anywhere immediately and either report the problem to your bank (the course of action recommended by the police in most places) or get competent local legal advice.

As with the two previous related scams, the scammers are ripping off the identity of a real company. In this case, they are impersonating the "Aegis Capital Group LLC" that uses the web address http://www.aegiscapitalgroup.com/. Please be sure that you are dealing with the genuine article, and not a crooked rip-off.

It seems that impostors at www.statoil.ie are ripping off the identity of www.statoil.com. The clever idiots at the .ie registry don't publish the creation date of their domains, so I can't tell you when this scam came into effect, but judging by the domain expiry date it was around 11-January-2007. The real Statoil site has been around for over ten years, in contrast.

Other than that, what can I say? Same old boring money mule scams. Probably Nigerian or Russian. Probably involves fake cheques.

Hida Canada Hotel (fake)

Canadian hotels are an ongoing theme here, and interesting only for the fact that the job scam is something other than the common money mule scam. I haven't pusued this one in detail, and I'd be interested in feedback from those who have, but I believe that the scam is advance fee fraud. They con you into paying up-front fees associated with visa applications and insurance, with the lure being a free trip to Canada. They take your money and run, of course. They'll also be glad to take a copy of your passport details.

This email suffered from broken formatting, and I've removed the excess line-breaks. There are lots of companies called "Starco", but in this case "Starco Uk industry" is just a name made up to create an excuse for a money mule scam. It's not clear where this one originates, or which variation on the scam they are conducting: I'm undecided as to whether this is cheque fraud or direct transfer fraud. If I can find out, I'll post a comment about it.
